Sylvia Plath from an April 1956 journal entry about how she plans to win friends and influence people.
Whenever I get writer’s block, which is more often than I get writer’s FLOW, I pick up my copy of Plath’s unabridged journals and reread everything I have furiously underlined and starred over the years. Its somewhat like my own personal writer’s bible. And it undoubtedly saves and inspires.
I want nothing more in life than to write with the depth and fluidity that Plath did. I always have. What she does with words is…beautiful and magnetic and enchanting. And the most magical and incredible thing about her journals is that they weren’t written for an audience - she practically thought in captivating prose.
For years I have tried to adapt her style into my own, but that’s been tougher than I imagined. Maybe because I haven’t even figured out exactly what I want to say and how I want to say it, although that has never stopped me from writing. I just want people to FEEL my writing the way I have felt hers.
Writers write what they know. Plath experienced some things in life that are far beyond what my life may ever hold, but thats how she developed her style, and I guess I am in the process of doing the same…
